PORTLAND

$10 MILLION TOTAL COST

PROJECTED COMPLETION: SPRING/SUMMER 2025

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS: 5,973 SQ FT ADDITION | ADDITION OF MAKERSPACE | ADDITION OF ELEVATOR

Built in 1913, the Portland Library is a center of community life for residents in Louisville’s Portland neighborhood. The historic Carnegie building is long overdue for renovation and expansion.

In addition to aging infrastructure and deferred maintenance, the Portland Library is also one of the smallest public libraries in the city at just 5,950 square feet. This means a smaller collection and severely limited programming space.

Many patrons of the Portland Library also face significant accessibility challenges. Common for a building of its era, the structure has no elevator and insufficiently leveled entrances to offset the sweeping stairwells inside and outside the building.

When complete, the Portland Library renovations will add 5,973 square feet of usable space and create a library that is accessible and welcoming to all neighbors.

The current Portland Library is not easily accessible...Having mobility issues means parking around the back of the building to use the external ramp that leads indoors. Having better access is a big win!

PORTLAND GROUNDBREAKING

With shovels in hand, Mayor Greg Fischer, Library Director Lee Burchfield, District 5 Councilwoman Donna Purvis, representatives from the Library Foundation, and members of the community officially broke ground on September 6, 2022 on the much-anticipated expansion of the Portland Library.
